Alberta Iela 1 (Albert Street 1), Riga

Alberta Iela 1 (Albert Street 1), Riga

Albert Street 1 is one of the earliest Art Nouveau buildings constructed in Riga. Dating from 1901, it marks a transition from Eclecticism to Art Nouveau. The architects, Heinrich Karl Scheel and August Friedrich Sheffel, of the renowned Scheel & Scheffel architectural firm, were among the city's pioneers of Art Nouveau.

In recent years, the building has regained much of its original splendor. The decorative elements in the apartments and stairwells, as well as those on the façades, have been carefully restored.

The tasteful refinement and evidence of the residents' affluence are reflected in the richly adorned façade, featuring numerous reliefs and Art Nouveau ornamental details. The interiors, with their decorative ceilings and cut-glass elements, further enhance the building's character, making it one of Riga's most beautiful architectural monuments from the dawn of the 20th century. Among those who once lived here was the Latvian writer Zenta Mauriņa.

Today, the property is included on both the UNESCO World Heritage List and the State List of Protected Cultural Monuments.
