All Saints' Church, Dunedin
All Saints' Church in Dunedin is the city’s oldest Anglican church still in regular use, with roots stretching back to its founding in 1865. Recognised as a Category I historic site by Heritage New Zealand, the church is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture. Originally designed by William H. Clayton, the nave was completed in 1865, while the transepts and chancel-added in 1873-were the work of William Mason. The church stands near the University of Otago and is closely connected to Selwyn College, serving as its chapel. This long-standing partnership reflects the church's ongoing role in the spiritual and academic life of North Dunedin.
Architecturally, All Saints' is distinguished by its polychrome brickwork, made from local Filleul Street clay, and by its early use of creamy Oamaru stone-materials that give the building a unique texture and visual warmth. Major restoration took place in 1969, which included new foundations, a hardwood floor, and a slate roof. During this renovation, a nave altar with custom-designed altar rails by noted architect Ted McCoy was added, updating the liturgical layout while preserving the church’s historical essence.
The interior is home to several notable works of religious art. A dramatic rood carved by Frederick George Gurnsey hangs above the sanctuary, while his craftsmanship also adorns the aumbry door and pulpit. A Christus Rex sculpture by acclaimed artist Ria Bancroft presides above the pulpit, offering a focal point of modern devotion. More recently, in 2017, a set of ceramic sculptures depicting the Scriptural Way of the Cross by Kirk Nicholls was installed, blending tradition with contemporary artistic interpretation.
