America's Cup Pavilion, Valencia

America's Cup Pavilion, Valencia

The America's Cup Building, or Foredeck Building, is a notable structure in Valencia. Designed by architect David Chipperfield and opened in 2006, it's locally known as "Veles e Vents," symbolizing the wind's power. This sea-facing building has received prestigious European architectural prizes like the LEAF Awards.

As the headquarters and social center of the foremost racing competition in the world, the America's Cup, it marks the event's return to Europe after 150 years. The decision to host the competition in Valencia was made in 2003, following the victory of the Swiss team Alinghi over Team New Zealand.

The Veles e Vents building holds a central position in the redevelopment of Valencia's industrial port. It serves as the base for all the participating teams in the America's Cup, as well as a venue for the public to witness the thrilling races.

The structure consists of four floors that appear to float in the air, each the size of half a football field. Constructed with reinforced concrete and featuring significant overhangs, the building's design is a distinctive characteristic of the Foredeck.

The building incorporates a series of open platforms resembling spacious terraces, varying in size and interconnected by visually appealing external staircases.

Each floor has its own dimensions, cantilevers, and unique configurations, presenting challenges during the construction process, especially where the ground floor and the deck overlap, resulting in a height saving of over 25 meters. In some areas, the floors are not directly supported by the ground.

Why You Should Visit:
The architecture and the views of the harbor from the various terraces make for an impressive venue. Also a good location for festivities and maritime events.

Tip:
Worth seeing at night, with its polychrome lighting and its emission of a confused and strident mixture of musical noises.
