Anchor and Gun, Sochi

Anchor and Gun, Sochi

The Anchor and Gun Monument was built in 1913 using the personal funds of Admiral Leonid Fedorovich Dolinsky to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of Fort Navaginskoye in 1838. Its main historical dedication is linked to the Treaty of Adrianople of 1829, which secured the Black Sea coastline for Russia after the Russo-Turkish War.

Both elements of the composition are authentic. The cannon dates from 1807 and was cast at the Alexandrovsky factory in Petrozavodsk, later used in 19th-century naval service. The anchor belonged to the Russian corvette Penderaklia, which sank near Cape Vardan during a storm in 1838, at the time of the Caucasian War. Recovered from the sea, these objects were brought together to connect specific naval events with the broader history of coastal defense.

The monument faces the sea to underline its defensive role. Instead of a decorative or celebratory design, it uses plain military objects. This approach emphasizes vigilance and control of sea routes, with real naval equipment conveying the message without ornament.
