Ashok Binayak, Kathmandu

Ashok Binayak, Kathmandu

Ashok Binayak is a revered Hindu temple situated in the Kathmandu district, specifically to the east of Kathmandu Durbar Square in Maru Tole. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, also known as Binayak, the deity is celebrated as the god of luck. The temple is one of the four original Ganesh shrines in the Kathmandu Valley, making it a significant site of worship for both Hindus and Buddhists.

The temple is distinguished by its architecture; it is a single-story structure notable for its lack of a traditional gajur, or pointed rooftop ornament, which is typical in local temple design. This architectural feature, or lack thereof, is reflected in the name of the locality "Maru," which translates to "does not have" in the Newari language. Additionally, the temple's exterior is entirely plated in gold, and it is currently surrounded by bars for protection.

Ashok Binayak, along with Chandra Binayak, Surya Binayak, and Jal Binayak, form the quartet of original Ganesh shrines in the valley. Other Ganesh temples like Kamal Binayak and Karya Binayak are also popular within the region.

The temple is a focal point of worship, especially on Tuesdays, which are dedicated to Ganesh. It also sees heightened activity during festivals such as Dashain and Indra Jatra, when the Ganesh statue is adorned with a metallic cover, often made of silver. The temple's vicinity features a representation of a mouse, considered a loyal vahana (vehicle) of Lord Ganesh, and areas designated for lighting oil candles. Bells also adorn the temple, enhancing its spiritual ambiance.

This sacred site serves as a vital cultural and religious landmark in Kathmandu, drawing devotees regularly to seek blessings and partake in its serene and spiritual atmosphere.
