Austmann Bryggeri, Trondheim
Austmann Bryggeri epitomizes the vibrant craft beer scene in Trondheim. Founded in 2013 by Thomas Sjue, Vinko Lien Sindelar, and Anders Cooper, this Norwegian brewery embodies ambition, innovation, and a commitment to the art of brewing. Situated in Sluppen, the brewery has humble yet inspiring beginnings. The founders secured funding by refinancing the homes of two mothers and an aunt, a bold move that paved the way for Austmann's inception.
Initially located in Høvringen, Austmann Bryggeri started with a 9-hectoliter brewery made from repurposed dairy equipment. This innovative approach enabled them to introduce over 60 different beer varieties within the first two years-a number that has significantly grown since. Their diverse range quickly gained popularity, leading to increased exports. Presently, Austmann's core beer selection is widely distributed across Norway's supermarkets, bars, and restaurants, with around 15% of their production reaching international markets.
In January 2016, the founders partnered with Hansa Borg Bryggerier, with each party owning 50% of Austmann Bryggeri's shares. This collaboration marked a new chapter, strengthening the brewery's position in the Norwegian craft beer scene.
Austmann Bryggeri has since established a new brewery and taproom in Sluppen, Trondheim. This facility serves as the production center for their extensive beer range and a gathering spot for beer enthusiasts to experience their craft firsthand.
The name "Austmann" is derived from Old Norse, symbolizing Norwegians who ventured westward from the Norwegian coast in the 900s, embodying the brewery's adventurous spirit. Austmann Bryggeri's tale intertwines historical homage, community, and the pioneering zeal of its founders-a distinct blend that continues to leave its mark both domestically and internationally.
