Avenida Reforma (Reform Avenue), Guatemala City

Avenida Reforma (Reform Avenue), Guatemala City

Reform Avenue is one of the city’s most iconic thoroughfares, stretching roughly one mile between 1a Calle and 20 Calle. Designed in the 19th-century French style, its wide tree-lined boulevard and landscaped median offer a park-like atmosphere framed by public art and towering palms.

The avenue serves as an open-air museum of monuments and sculptures. Along its path you’ll encounter statues honoring heroes like Miguel García Granados, Justo Rufino Barrios, Nobel laureate Miguel Ángel Asturias, and symbols such as the Monument to the Mother and the Star of David in Plaza Israel.

By day, the avenue is popular for guided walking and cycling tours that weave through the city's architectural highlights and newer commercial zones, offering rest stops at cafés and restaurants among modern offices and hotels. On Sunday mornings, parts of the avenue are closed to motorized traffic-turning it into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly promenade. At its southern end, it culminates at Monument to the Heroes of Independence, featuring an obelisk, a monumental Guatemalan flag, fountains, and inviting green spaces.
