Bischofshof (Bishop’s Residence), Linz
Nestled in the heart of Linz’s charming Old Town, the Bischofshof (Bishop’s Residence) is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and a cornerstone of the city’s ecclesiastical history. Built between 1719 and 1726 by the renowned architect Jakob Prandtauer-also known for his designs of Melk and St. Florian abbeys-this elegant building was originally constructed by Kremsmunster Abbey to serve as the abbot’s residence in the state capital. From 1765, it became the official residence of Governor Thurheim, and in 1783, following the founding of the Diocese of Linz, Emperor Joseph II assigned the property to the Bishop of Linz as his residence. It was formally acquired by the diocese a century later under Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier, with the final payment to Kremsmunster Abbey completed in 1918.
Today, the Bischofshof continues to serve as the residence and official seat of the diocesan bishop. It also houses key ecclesiastical offices, including the Vicariate General, the Episcopal Ordinariate, and the School Office, making it an important center for the Roman Catholic Church in Upper Austria.
Although the interior is not open to the public, the building’s magnificent façade and serene courtyards offer an inviting glimpse into Linz’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Located near the Mariendom (New Cathedral) and just a short walk from the bustling Hauptplatz, the Bischofshof is a highlight of any Old Town walking tour.
