Blundells Cottage, Canberra
Blundells Cottage, a heritage-listed stone building, is a historical gem located on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, Australia. Constructed in around 1858 by George P. Campbell for his ploughman William Ginn, the cottage originally stood on the Molonglo River floodplain. Ginn and his family lived there until 1874, after which Flora and George Blundell moved in, staying until about 1933. Flora was a midwife, and George worked as a bullock driver for Campbell.
In 1913, the Duntroon estate, including Blundells Cottage, was acquired by the Commonwealth of Australia to form part of the new Federal Capital Territory. Despite this change, the Blundell family continued to reside in the cottage. After the Blundells, Harry and Alice Oldfield became the cottage's occupants in 1933, with Alice remaining there until her death in 1958. Plans to demolish the cottage were halted when Sir William Holford suggested preserving it as a museum.
Blundells Cottage was subsequently renovated by the National Capital Development Commission and managed by the Canberra and District Historic Society until 1990. Today, the National Capital Authority oversees the cottage as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into nineteenth-century rural life in Australia. The cottage's survival and preservation make it a significant reminder of Canberra's early history and its agricultural roots.
