Botanischer Garten, Graz

The Botanical Garden of the Institute for Plant Sciences at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, situated in the third district of Graz, is a place of rich historical and botanical significance. Established originally as part of the Joanneum in 1811, the garden was relocated to its current location on Schubertstraße in 1887, marking a significant phase in its development.

The botanical garden is renowned for its diverse range of greenhouses, which cater to a variety of climates and plant species. These include the tropical house, showcasing a range of exotic plants from tropical climates; the cold house, designed for plants from cooler environments; the tempered house, which maintains a moderate climate for a broad spectrum of plant life; and the succulent house, home to a variety of succulents and cacti. This assortment of greenhouses ensures that the Botanical Garden can accommodate a wide range of plant species, each requiring different environmental conditions to thrive.

A notable phase in the garden's evolution began in 1989 with the construction of new greenhouses, which officially opened to the public on June 25, 1995. These modern facilities replaced the first greenhouse constructed in 1889, which served the garden until the opening of the new greenhouses. Despite plans for its demolition in 1997, the original greenhouse was preserved thanks to the efforts of a citizens' initiative. Recognized as a listed building since 2008, it underwent extensive renovation and was reopened in September 2021, adding a layer of historical richness to the garden.

The garden and its greenhouses are freely accessible to the public via the entrance to Schubertstraße. This accessibility allows both locals and visitors to explore the beauty and diversity of the plant world housed within this botanical haven. The Botanical Garden in Graz thus stands not only as a center for botanical research and education but also as a place of relaxation and enjoyment for the community, offering a serene escape into nature within the urban landscape of Graz.
