Rue Bou Ksissat (Bou Ksissat Street), Fes

From Avenue du Batha to Avenue Moulay Youssef, Bou Ksissat Street, formerly known as the rue des Merinides, stretches around the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter of Fes el-Jdid. The street is the main artery of the ancient Mellah, once attached to the Royal Palace and protected by the sultan. Today it is part of Fes el-Jdid, a lively commercial district.

The street is lined with shops, especially jewelry shops as one approaches Gate of the Farriers. The facade of many of the houses are in the Andalusian style of architecture, with balconies and ornately decorated windows.

The street can be noisy at night (there are dogs). But parking and lodging is available. It is very close to the old city, a short stair climb to the market and the Jewish quarter and the Royal Palace.

The northern part of Bou Ksissat Street was a wealthier area mostly with Jewish immigrants from Spain. Here houses were luxurious and richly decorated.

Fes New Town Walking Tour

Created by the French in the early 20th century, Ville Nouvelle (New Town) is a relatively modern central district of Fez. A far cry from the sensory overload provided by the old Medina, this neighborhood was originally designed to accommodate foreigners and affluent Moroccans only.
