Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur

Brickfields is a lively neighbourhood best known as the city’s Little India. Its streets are lined with Indian restaurants, textile shops, jewellery stores, and businesses serving the area’s large Indian community. Visitors are especially drawn to its food, including banana leaf rice and thosai, a thin pancake made from fermented rice and lentil batter.

Brickfields is also one of Kuala Lumpur’s main transport gateways. KL Sentral, the city’s central public transportation hub, connects the neighbourhood with destinations across the capital and beyond. Alongside its modern buildings, the district retains traces of its railway and colonial past. Historic workers’ housing includes the railway quarters on Jalan Rozario and the Hundred Quarters on Jalan Chan Ah Tong, a row of terrace houses built in 1915 for junior government employees.

The neighbourhood is equally notable for its concentration of places of worship. Jalan Berhala, whose name means “Shrine Road,” is home to several long-established religious buildings, including the Buddhist Maha Vihara and the Sri Sakthi Karpaga Vinayagar Temple. Together, Brickfields’ cultural traditions, historic architecture, religious landmarks, and transport links make it one of Kuala Lumpur’s most distinctive districts.
