Budejovicka Brana (Budweis Gate), Cesky Krumlov
The Budweis Gate is a testament to the town's medieval fortifications and its strategic importance in the past. While it is the youngest of the nine city gates, it stands as a rare example of historical fortification architecture.
Built between 1598 and 1602, the gate was designed by the architect Domenico Benedetto Cometta from Eckthurn. Its architecture reflects the influence of North Italian fortress design. The gate is a two-story, four-sided tower with a formidable appearance. The front side features a massive protective wall topped with battlements.
While many of Český Krumlov's original fortifications and gates were demolished in the 19th century to accommodate urban development and industrialization, the Budweis Gate miraculously survived, allowing visitors to glimpse the town's historical defenses.
Inside the gate, visitors can admire fresco decorations that adorn the walls. Additionally, a sundial can be found at the level of the second floor.
Interestingly, the preserved part of the city fortifications near the park wall now houses an Italian cafe, allowing visitors to enjoy a meal or refreshments while surrounded by centuries-old history.
