Buffalo History Museum, Buffalo
The Buffalo History Museum is a cornerstone of Western New York’s cultural heritage, nestled in the northwest corner of Delaware Park on Museum Court. Originally built as the New York State pavilion for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, the building is the only permanent structure still standing from the fair. Designed by architect George Cary, its classical south portico was inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. Today, it's not only a visual landmark but also a National Historic Landmark since 1987.
The museum traces its roots to 1862 when it was founded as the Buffalo Historical Society with U.S. President Millard Fillmore as its first president. Over the decades, it evolved into the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society before adopting its current name in 2012.
Across its three floors, the museum houses a diverse range of exhibits-from local Indigenous history to modern civic life. Highlights include the Rotary Gallery with detailed model trains, the Pioneer Gallery, the Native American Gallery, and the ICONS exhibit, which celebrates Buffalo's rich sports legacy. Opened in 2017, ICONS features treasures like Ralph Wilson’s Hall of Fame jacket and Scott Norwood’s helmet, as well as rotating displays, including one on the Buffalo Beauts.
A standout feature is the faithful recreation of Tim Russert’s office, relocated from the Newseum in D.C. There’s also a darker piece of history: at the Resource Center, available by appointment, visitors can view the firearm used in the 1901 assassination of President William McKinley.
Whether you're a history buff, sports fanatic, or just curious about Buffalo's past, the Buffalo History Museum offers a rich, layered experience for all ages.
