The Café-Théâtre de la Fontaine d'Argent has been around since 1976. If the first Café-Théâtre in France opened in 1969 (the Café de la Gare), it took six years to see one in Aix-en-Provence. Indeed in 1975, Gérard Le Berre, tackled to extract a tank of 5000 liters from the cellar of a grocery store which also sells fuel oil rue Fontaine d'Argent. The Café-théâtre de la Fontaine d'Argent was inaugurated in 1976. At first it was a room where jazz was played, in particular with the American pianist Herbie Hancock.

In September 2010, Fabienne Bécu and Jacques Berthier took over from Sophie Laffont and the actress Isabelle Parsy as head of the café-théâtre. Currently it is made up of a room on the ground floor called Le bistro welcomes the public and where you can dine before or after the show. In the basement is the performance hall. It is a vaulted stone room with 80 seats.

In 35 years, the theater has received more than 200 artists and welcomes more than 20,000 spectators each year, from the Pays d'Aix and its surroundings, but also visitors from all over France 3 .

Since 2006, to close the season, the Théâtre de la Fontaine d'Argent has been organizing its laughter festival 4 for a week .
