Cam Pho Communal House, Hoi An
Dating back to the late 15th century, Cam Pho Communal House is renowned as the oldest communal house in Hoi An, steeped in rich history and cultural significance. Over the centuries, Cam Pho Communal House has undergone two significant renovations, first in 1817 and then in 1897. Originally dedicated to the worship of Thanh Hoang, Mrs. Dai Can, the river gods, and other guardian deities, the communal house later transitioned to honoring predecessors and late sages during its second renovation, earning the name "Cam Pho Huong Hien."
Cam Pho boasts a spacious layout encompassing banyan trees, a water wharf, and a communal yard, all imbued with generational significance and poetic charm. With an impressive area of 1125m2, the communal house is meticulously designed in an East-South direction, forming a distinctive "Quoc" shape.
Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a grand three-way gate constructed from sturdy bricks, adorned with the name "Cam Pho Huong Hien" and topped with two blooming lotus buds and large spheres. The main hall, a focal point of the communal house, features a vestibule with four roofs and two three-room East-West compartments flanking its sides. Inside the main hall, five compartments are divided by columns and high walls, creating a semicircular walkway. The three central compartments are adorned with meticulously carved incense tables, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail.
