Casa da Cultura is a local landmark. The building is cross-shaped and it was built by Jose Mamede Alves Ferreira in a sober style with neoclassical elements. Originally the building was a penitentiary. The structure of the original building was preserved, but now the cells house shops selling all types of local handicrafts like ceramics, leather works, lace, woodwork, clothes, local food and many other interesting regional items. In one cell is a museum that shows the history of the building during its time as a penitentiary.

There are a number of food stalls as well and sometimes they have groups performing traditional dances.

If you have the chance eat tapioca with coconut and cheese and ask for cold coconut water.
