Casa Murillo (Murillo House), La Paz
Murillo House was once the residence of Pedro Domingo Murillo, a key leader in the La Paz uprising of July 16, 1809. The house has been restored to preserve its original character and now functions as a museum. It features a collection of colonial-era art, furniture, textiles, medical items, musical instruments, and household objects made of glass and silver, many of which reflect the lifestyle of Bolivia’s upper class during that period.
Murillo played an important role in Bolivia’s early independence movement. In 1809, Murillo helped lead an uprising against Spanish colonial rule in La Paz, establishing one of the earliest revolutionary governments in South America. This movement, often called the “La Paz Revolution."
However, the rebellion was short-lived. Murillo was captured and executed on January 29, 1810, in what is now Murillo Square. One of the notable pieces on display is the painting “The Execution of Murillo,” which depicts this historical moment.
Murillo House offers visitors a clear look into the colonial history of La Paz and the life of Pedro Domingo Murillo. With its preserved interiors and detailed displays, the museum provides insight into both his personal story and the broader historical context of Bolivia during a key period in its path toward independence.
