Casa Natale di Amedeo Modigliani (Birthplace of Amedeo Modigliani), Livorno

The Birthplace of Amedeo Modigliani in Livorno is a three-story 19th-century building that retains the essence of bourgeois homes from post-unification Italy. This modest yet historical residence, where Modigliani was born on July 12, 1884, marks the early life of the famous painter and sculptor who later became a central figure of the early 20th-century avant-garde.

Visitors enter through a checkered marble entryway and ascend two stone staircases to the first floor, where the museum is housed. Though Modigliani's family originally occupied the entire building, the museum now focuses on the first floor. The space has been carefully restored to reflect the ambiance of the time, with original features such as decorative tiled floors, green shutters, and period furniture that recreate the atmosphere in which Modigliani grew up. A marble plaque outside the building commemorates his birth.

Inside, visitors can explore an exhibition curated by the Guastalla family, featuring documentation on Modigliani’s life, including photographs and autograph documents sourced from the Archives Légales in Paris. The rooms tell the story of his artistic journey, from his childhood days in Livorno to his later years in Paris. Highlights include family portraits, childhood photos, and personal documents like his school reports and bar mitzvah records. The home also sheds light on Modigliani’s mother, Eugenia Garsin, who operated a prestigious private school from within their home.

In addition to showcasing Modigliani’s artworks and sculptures, the museum hosts conferences on Modigliani and his contemporaries, promoting further study of his contributions to art. The apartment is accessible by appointment, offering visitors a chance to step into the life of one of Livorno’s most celebrated artists.
