Castello di Arechi (Castle of Arechi), Salerno (must see)
Perched atop Mount Bonadies, about 300 meters above sea level, the imposing Arechi Castle overlooks the city of Salerno and its gulf. Its strategic position made it a key defensive stronghold long before the medieval period, with origins tracing back to the Gothic-Byzantine era. In the late 8th century, Lombard prince Arechi II transformed the site into a major fortified residence, reinforcing Salerno’s role as the political center of the Lombard principality after the fall of the northern kingdom to Charlemagne.
Built using local dark stone, the castle reflects centuries of adaptation and expansion. The central core, developed during the Lombard period, was later strengthened in Norman and subsequent medieval phases. Its layout includes defensive walls, towers, and fortified gateways designed to follow the natural contours of the hill. Among the most notable elements is the so-called Bastille, a watchtower positioned to the northwest, which formed part of a broader surveillance and defense system.
Today, the castle is set within a park of Mediterranean vegetation, where paths wind through pine and scrub landscapes toward the upper terraces. Inside the complex, visitors can explore the Archaeological Museum, which displays artifacts recovered from the site and surrounding area, including ceramics, glass, coins, and everyday objects that trace the castle’s long occupation. The Multimedia Museum complements this with visual reconstructions and historical narratives, helping to place the ruins within their original context.
Walking along the walls and open spaces, visitors encounter not only architectural remains but also wide, uninterrupted views over Salerno, its harbor, and the coastline. Reaching the castle involves a gradual ascent along paths and steps through the hillside, though it can also be accessed by road. The climb itself forms part of the experience, unfolding into one of the most expansive viewpoints over the city and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
