Central Christian Church, Lexington

Central Christian Church, Lexington

Central Christian Church is a welcoming historic landmark nestled in the heart of downtown. Founded by Barton Stone in 1816 and rooted in the Stone–Campbell Restoration Movement, this church marks the birthplace of a major united Christian congregation in 1832. It is the descendant of successive congregations-the Hill Street and Main Street Christian Churches-that shaped its identity and legacy.

Constructed between 1893 and 1894, the current stone structure is a striking exemplar of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and is Lexington’s foremost remaining example of that style. Designed by the Smith Brothers firm and built by John H. Walker, the building features rough local stone walls contrasted with imported Longmeadow puddingstone from Massachusetts. Twin steep gables flank a robust, 95‑foot bell tower, richly detailed with a carved terracotta frieze, diaper stone patterns, polished granite columns, and broad arched windows.

A fire in 1933 destroyed the original sanctuary, but the rebuilt space-completed in 1934-blends seamlessly with the historic exterior and preserves many Romanesque hallmarks, such as semicircular arches and a rose window. Educational wings and a cloistered chapel were added during the mid‑20th century, thoughtfully designed to maintain visual harmony through matching arches, columns, and brickwork.

Today, Central Christian is not only an active congregation but also a beacon of inclusivity and community outreach, celebrating over 200 years of service in 2016. Visitors are drawn to its historic ambience, beautiful stained glass, and the intricate craftsmanship of its stone and terracotta details. Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast or a history buff, this architectural gem offers a profound connection to Lexington’s religious and civic heritage.
