Cerro de la Gloria (Glory Hill), Mendoza
Glory Hill is a notable small mount with significant historical value. At the top, you'll find a monumental tribute to the Army of the Andes, created by Uruguayan sculptor Juan Manuel Ferrari and several Argentine artists. The construction started in 1911 and was inaugurated on February 12, 1914, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Chacabuco. The monument features an allegorical representation of Freedom or the Republic and an equestrian statue of San Martin with the inscription "The Fatherland to the Army of the Andes."
To enhance the site's cultural and heritage value, Mendoza has developed the San Martiniana Route and introduced a multimedia show called "Let's be free." This show includes lights, sounds, and projections to highlight the monument's significance. Modern LED lighting has replaced the old system, improving visibility, security, and reducing visual clutter. The green spaces around the monument have also been updated with new flora, an irrigation system, and street furniture.
Declared Cultural Heritage of the Province of Mendoza, the hike up Glory Hill takes about 45 minutes and offers panoramic views of the city. At the top, the impressive bronze monument honoring General San Martin and his battalion, which marched from Mendoza to Chile to free the country from Spanish rule, awaits.
