Chapelle du Calvaire (Chapel of Calvary), Fort-de-France

Chapelle du Calvaire (Chapel of Calvary), Fort-de-France

The Chapel of Calvary is a significant religious landmark, offering both spiritual sanctuary and stunning panoramic views.

Constructed from stone, masonry, and wood, the chapel dates back to the end of the 19th century. It was blessed on July 5, 1874, and underwent restoration in 1935 to prepare for the ceremonies commemorating the tercentenary of Martinique's annexation to France. Since then, the chapel has stood as a symbol of religious devotion and historical significance.

Situated atop the heights of Fort-de-France, the Calvary Chapel commands an incredible view of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, visitors can gaze out upon the cathedral, the sprawling savannah, and the vast expanse of the city below. On clear days, the view extends even further, offering glimpses of the Three Islets in the distance.

While the chapel is a popular destination for religious gatherings throughout the year, it particularly draws crowds on Holy Days, especially during the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. On these occasions, many faithful come to observe the traditional Stations of the Cross, a devotional practice commemorating the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
