Château Hagen, Noumea
Château Hagen-originally known as the “Banyan Villa”, referring to the banyan tree that stood on the property-is a beautifully preserved late 19th-century residence that blends French colonial elegance, with wide verandas, high ceilings, and lush gardens. Constructed between 1889 and 1892 by Anne‑Marie Taragnat and her husband Georges Marcel Préveraud de Sonneville, the villa was built following designs left by Anne-Marie’s father, the missionary Jean Taragnat.
In 1903, the property changed hands when it was purchased by Lucy Hagen, widow of prominent trader Nicolas Frédéric Hagen. She gave the villa the name “Ratisbonne,” a direct reference to the German city of Regensburg, chosen in honor of the Bavarian city connected to her family’s roots. Over the decades, from 1916 to 1947, it housed John‑Charles “Tiby” Hagen-Lucy’s eldest son-and his family, giving the mansion its lasting identity as Chateau Hagen.
Today, Chateau Hagen is owned by the Province Sud and has been officially designated a historical monument. The site also includes the adjoining Taragnat house, stables, and expansive grounds featuring an ornamental park, a pedagogical vegetable garden, exhibition pavilions, and an open-air amphitheater-all part of its restored heritage landscape.
As Nouméa’s foremost cultural hub, it hosts an array of artistic and educational activities throughout the year-from temporary exhibitions and theatrical performances to concerts, dance shows, film screenings, circus acts, botanical tours, and specialized workshops for all ages. Visitors can enjoy guided historical and botanical tours.

The city’s name likely comes from a Kanak word, though the precise meaning is lost-much like other fragments of the island’s precolonial past.
