Chattanooga Zoo, Chattanooga

The Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park isn’t your average stroll-through-and-squint-at-the-animals kind of place. This 13-acre zoological wonderland is designed to bring visitors face-to-face with its 500+ residents, making it one of the most engaging zoos in the region. Forget the long lines and elbow-to-elbow crowds-this is a place where you have time to notice a chimpanzee’s curious gaze, a jaguar’s sleek movements, or a red panda’s playful antics.

Founded in 1937 with just a few monkey cages, Chattanooga Zoo has evolved into a world of immersive habitats. From sub-Saharan Africa to the Himalayan Passage, visitors can explore naturalistic enclosures, including the largest indoor red panda exhibit, alongside snow leopards and white-cheeked gibbons.

The Gombe Forest exhibit, built in 2001, provides a naturalistic indoor-outdoor habitat for the zoo’s beloved chimpanzees. Named after Jane Goodall’s famous research site, this area was home to Hank, the zoo’s most famous resident until his passing in 2011. Visitors can learn more about these fascinating primates at the Donovan Interpretive Center, which also features smaller exhibits.

For those who like their zoo visits a little more interactive, Chattanooga Zoo delivers. Ride a camel, feed a giraffe, or get up close with some scaly, slithery reptiles. Keeper chats provide insight into animal behaviors, while “Storytime” and “Nature Play” encourage younger visitors to engage with the zoo’s wildlife and habitats in creative ways. And if petting adorable farm animals is on your agenda, the Warner Park Ranch petting zoo is always a hit.

In addition to the animals, the zoo offers plenty of family-friendly attractions, including a carousel and the Zoo Choo Train. Parking is convenient, and a well-stocked gift shop ensures you can take home a wildlife-themed souvenir. Whether you love animals, seek a fun family outing, or just enjoy the outdoors, Chattanooga Zoo is a must-visit. Bring your curiosity-and a camera!
