Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Melaka

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, also known as the Temple of the Green Clouds, stands on Jalan Tokong in Melaka’s historic Chinese quarter. Traditionally dated to 1645, it is Malaysia’s oldest functioning traditional Chinese temple and remains an active place of worship. Additional structures followed in 1673, and the present main hall was built in 1704. The complex was extensively rebuilt in 1801. The temple brings together elements of Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Chinese folk religion.

Before passing through the gate, look up at the curved roof ridges, where dragons, phoenixes, figurines, and ceramic decorations create a richly layered roofline. Painted scenes from Chinese legends and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms also appear among the temple’s decorative artwork. As you enter, ahead of you is the main prayer hall, while the temple’s tall red ceremonial flagpoles rise near its façade.

Proceed directly into the main prayer hall, moving quietly because worshipers may be praying or presenting offerings. The central altar is dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and the temple’s principal deity. Look for her statue in the middle of the altar arrangement, surrounded by incense burners, candles, flowers, fruit, and other offerings.

Now look toward the altar on the left of Guanyin. It is dedicated to Ma Choe Po, also known as Mazu, the guardian of fishermen and seafarers. Her presence reflects the importance of maritime travel to the Chinese merchants who settled in Melaka. On the right-hand altar, look for the figures of Poh Seng Tye Tay, associated with well-being; Kwan Ti, the God of Justice; and Thai Sway Yah, associated with human welfare.

The smaller prayer chambers around the complex contain deities associated with wealth, longevity, and family prosperity, while another section preserves ancestral tablets commemorating members of the Chinese community.
