Chiesa di Sant'Anna (St. Anne's Church), Alghero

Saint Anne's Church (Chiesa di Sant'Anna Intra Moenia) in Alghero is a modest yet significant Catholic place of worship nestled in the historic center of the Sardinian city. Though no longer open for regular services, it holds an important historical and devotional presence. The church distinguishes itself from a rural counterpart of the same name located south of the city by the suffix "within the walls" (intra mœnia).

Built in 1735 at the request of Simon Lacu, a private citizen who generously donated this place of worship, the church was dedicated to Saint Anne, revered as the protector of pregnant women. This devotion to Saint Anne is also reflected in the existence of the other rural churches bearing her name.

Located on Via Roma, which was once known as Cemetery Street, the church stands near where a cemetery had been established in 1625. Its sandstone façade features a small wooden door flanked by decorative pilasters, adding to its humble and charming appearance. The pilasters, while seemingly structural, are purely decorative and are adorned with bas-relief and high-relief details, adding visual interest to the otherwise simple structure. A sixteenth-century-style architrave sits atop the pilasters, enhancing the classical aesthetic.

Inside, the church has a single nave, covered by a barrel vault divided into two bays by a transverse arch. The arch, resting on pilasters, separates the nave from the presbytery, maintaining the church’s intimate and unassuming atmosphere.
