Church and the Museum of Saint Catherine of Sinai, Heraklion
Nestled close to the Cathedral of Saint Minas, the Church and Museum of Saint Catherine of Sinai has bestowed its name upon the charming square of Saint Catherine, a vibrant space with cafeterias, playgrounds, and a lively atmosphere. Despite the modern developments around it, this stone Venetian church preserves an air of timeless beauty.
Originally a dependency of the Monastery of Sinaites, the Church of Saint Catherine has roots dating back to the 10th century, while the existing structure is believed to have been built during the Venetian era in the 16th century. During a significant period from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century, the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinaites functioned as a university school, attracting scholars, philosophers, theologians, artists, and notable figures from the local community. Graduates, including renowned Cretan writers like Vitsentzos Cornaros, contributed to the cultural richness of the island.
Following the Ottoman occupation of Heraklion in 1669, the church underwent a transformation into a Muslim mosque, a role it played until the early 20th century when Crete regained its independence.
Today, the Church of Saint Catherine serves as the Ecclesiastical Museum of Heraklion, displaying a precious collection of rare icons painted by Michael Damaskinos, a prominent artist of the Cretan School of Icon Painting. The museum also features ecclesiastical vestments, manuscripts, and frescoes. While open daily in the morning for visitors, a special service is held just once a year on the feast day of Saint Catherine, celebrated on November 25th.

Heraklion Introduction Walking Tour
Legend tells that Heracles once set foot on Crete to capture the mighty Cretan Bull — a labor that tested both his strength and endurance. From that tale comes the name “Heraklion,” meaning “city of Heracles,” a fitting tribute to a place that has itself endured through centuries of change and conquest.
