Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Agnes, Genoa

Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Agnes, Genoa

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Agnes (Chiesa di Nostra Signora del Carmine e Sant'Agnese) offers a compelling glimpse into the city’s religious and architectural evolution. Originally two separate churches-Saint Agnes founded around 1192 and Carmel built by Carmelite friars in the mid-13th century-they were united in 1799 and expanded over time. The present facade, added in 1892, blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements, though the church’s sober exterior belies the richly detailed interior.

Inside, the church reveals a Gothic-inspired layout with three soaring nave sections defined by alternating black-and-white stone arches, typical of Ligurian ecclesiastical design. A rare square apse-one of the few surviving in Genoa-is illuminated by clerestory windows.

Significant artworks grace the interior: medieval frescoes from the late 1200s, including nine Carmelite saint medallions by Manfredino da Pistoia, emerged during a 2009 restoration. The church’s art collection is further enriched by Baroque paintings from Genoese masters such as Giovanni Battista Carlone, Gioacchino Assereto, Giovanni Battista Paggi, and Bernardo Castello.
