Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Kilkenny

Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Kilkenny

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist, also known as John's Church, is an exemplary Gothic Revival-style churchc onstructed between 1903 and 1908. It stands on the grounds of a former church within a picturesque graveyard adorned with trees and greenery. This architectural gem, designated as the O'Loughlin Memorial Church, was commissioned by the O'Loughlin family of Sandford's Court and erected on land generously donated by James Butler, the third Marquess of Ormonde.

The church's design is attributed to William Hague, with construction overseen by William Henry Byrne. Though plans for additional ornamentation were proposed, the lack of embellishment at the summit suggests that certain aspects of the original design, including an extra stage and spire, were never realized.
