Church of Saint Mary della Porta or Saint Louis, Lecce

Church of Saint Mary della Porta or Saint Louis, Lecce

The Church of Saint Mary della Porta, also known as Saint Louis, is a unique religious building in the historic center, originally built outside the city walls before being relocated and expanded in the 16th century. The church’s growth was inspired by a remarkable local event in 1567 involving the recovery of a woman named Laura Macchia, which brought renewed attention and devotion to the site.

Its early façade featured a large rose window and several doors with decorative lunettes, reflecting its Renaissance origins.

Rebuilt in a neoclassical style between 1852 and 1858 under architect Giuseppe Maiola da Maddaloni, the church is notable for its compact, geometric form and an unusual octagonal plan crowned by a dome.

The dome’s exterior is covered in colorful majolica tiles, while the interior features floral motifs set within recessed panels that draw the eye upward.

Though simpler and less ornate than Lecce’s typical Baroque churches, Saint Mary della Porta stands out for its distinctive shape and stunning dome, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in architectural variety within the city.

However, it first steps firmly into the record in the 3rd century BC as Lupiae under Roman control. The name is thought to come from lupus, the Latin word for wolf, recalling the animals that once...  view more
