Church of San Juan Bautista of Yanahuara, Arequipa

The Church of San Juan Bautista of Yanahuara stands out as a distinctive architectural marvel, notable for its exclusive use of Sillar stone, a hallmark material of Arequipa. Currently overseen by San Juan Bautista de Yanahuara as its parish priest, its roots trace back to the 18th century when it was founded by the Augustinian Recollects.

Revered for its grandeur architecture, the church boasts a Baroque style bell-tower and a cream-colored ecclesiastical façade, contributing to its status as one of Peru's premier churches. Dating back to its completion in 1750, this historical edifice boasts a facade adorned with intricate foliage ornamentation, characteristic of the eighteenth century. From its square tower to its meticulously crafted exterior, the church exudes a mestizo baroque style, with the first body of the shafts intricately decorated with vegetal elements and legends.

As one approaches, the portal's arch is flanked by angels guiding the viewer's gaze towards a depiction of the titular saint. Niches on the second level feature reliefs of revered figures like Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Dominic of Guzman, while the central point of honor hosts a finely carved figure of Saint John the Baptist. Above, coats of arms of religious orders and the relief image of Our Lady of the Rosary adorn the church's upper reaches, culminating in a pinnacle with accompanying figures of saints.

Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by an exquisite mural painting from the eighteenth century, depicting scenes such as the baptism of Christ and a baroque altar adorned with revered figures. June 24 marks the celebration honoring San Juan Bautista, featuring traditional masses, processions, serenades, dances, and fireworks, making it a highlight of the destination's festivities.
