Church of St. Michael at White Well, Bergamo

The Church of Saint Michael at White Well is a historic church that holds significant architectural and artistic treasures.

As one approaches the church, they will notice its position in the corner, adjacent to the frescoed house of the vicar. The entrance to the church is through a grand rounded arch. The external fresco adorning the vicar's house is attributed to Giacomo Scanardi, adding an additional layer of beauty to the surroundings.

The church's origins can be traced back to the 8th century, although it has undergone numerous reconstructions throughout the centuries. The present facade, which stands today, dates back to the early 20th century. Stepping inside, one can observe the remarkable interior, which was extensively rebuilt during the 15th century. The reconstruction incorporated frescoes in a style influenced by Byzantine iconography, adding a unique touch to the church's artistic heritage.

The central chapel and the one on the right are also adorned with frescoes. Painted in 1577 by Giovan Battista Guarinoni d'Averara, these frescoes depict religious scenes and contribute to the overall grandeur of the church's interior. Additionally, the latter chapel houses a striking canvas titled "Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Paul," painted by Giovanni Paolo Lolmo.

Further exploration of the Church of Saint Michael reveals more artistic treasures. On the right wall, visitors will encounter a notable painting called "Madonna of the Rosary and Saints," created by Enea Salmeggia. This artwork is accompanied by two frescoes on the counterfacade, both the creations of Antonio Cifrondi. The frescoes depict "Christ and the Adulterous Woman" and "The Last Supper," offering powerful religious imagery.

For those who venture into the crypt, they will be greeted by 13th-century frescoes that provide a glimpse into the church's ancient history. Among these frescoes is one attributed to Antonio Boselli, portraying the "Enthroned Madonna and Saints."
