Coleccion del Museo Ruso (Russian Museum Collection), Malaga
The Russian Museum Collection Saint Petersburg Malaga is a cultural gem located in the former Royal Tobacco Factory in the Huelin neighborhood of Malaga. Opened on March 25, 2015, it marked the first European branch of the prestigious Russian State Museum. Situated in a historic building designed in 1929 with a regionalist classicist style, it combines industrial heritage with a modern artistic mission.
The museum quickly became a cultural hub, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually and hosting 18 exhibitions that drew more than half a million visitors during its tenure as a representative of Russian art. Its 2,300 square meters of exhibition space and 770 linear meters of display area have accommodated both permanent and temporary exhibits, showcasing around 100 pieces in long-term displays and over 50 works in rotating exhibitions.
The facility offers more than just galleries; it includes an auditorium, screening rooms, children's workshops, a reading room, a virtual museum, and a cafeteria and shop, making it a multifaceted venue for cultural enrichment.
The museum's location in Huelin, part of Malaga’s 19th-century industrial expansion, ties it to the city's historical development. Designed by industrial engineers Juan Francisco Delgado and Carlos Dendariana, alongside civil engineers Fernando Guerra and Francisco González Estefani, and architect Mariano García Morales, the building reflects its regionalist roots.
However, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the original collection returned to Russia. Since then, the Malaga City Council has kept the museum operational with exhibitions sourced from private collectors, continuing its cultural legacy despite geopolitical challenges.

Pablo Picasso's Malaga
Among other things for which Malaga has gone down in history is being the town where Pablo Picasso, the famous painter and innovator of the Cubist movement, was born and spent his early childhood. The milieu and the daily life of those years inspired some of Picasso’s most characteristic subjects in paintings, such as flamenco, doves and bulls.

Malaga Introduction Walking Tour
Malaga is old. It is 2,800 years old. It is thought to have been founded by Phoenician traders in 770 BC. From its beginnings, it was a natural waypoint between Phoenicia in the eastern Mediterranean and Gibraltar. Cathaginians and, later, Romans ruled the city. Their core settlements were in an area between Gibralfaro Hill to the Guadalmedina River.
