College Hall, Montpelier
College Hall forms the architectural and symbolic centre of the Vermont College of Fine Arts campus. Completed in 1872, this prominent Second Empire building has long shaped the city’s skyline, its elevated position on Ridge Street reinforcing its presence as both a landmark and a place of learning. Recognized for its architectural significance, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
The site itself carries layers of history, from its earlier use as a Civil War military hospital to its selection in 1866 as the home of a Methodist seminary, chosen for its proximity to rail connections and the state capital. Since its construction between 1868 and 1872, College Hall has remained in continuous educational use, adapting through institutional changes that led to the creation of today’s Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Its design reflects the grandeur of its era: a cruciform brick structure with a mansard roof, a central tower rising above the entrance, and a rhythm of arched windows that illuminate the former chapel space. Decorative brickwork, granite detailing, and carefully proportioned façades contribute to a building that balances solidity with refinement, anchoring both the campus and the hilltop it occupies.
