Collegiate Church of Saint-André, Grenoble

Collegiate Church of Saint-André, Grenoble

The Collegiate Church of Saint-André stands as a distinguished example of Lombard Gothic architecture from the 13th century. Located directly across from the former Palace of the Parliament of the Dauphiné, the church was originally commissioned by Dauphin André of Burgundy in 1228 to serve as a collegiate church and dynastic burial site. Funded in part by revenues from silver mines in Brandes-en-Oisans, it symbolized the growing secular power of the Dauphins, who sought to assert authority independent of the local bishopric.

The structure is notable for its height and elegance, particularly its 56-meter bell tower-Grenoble's tallest building until the late 19th century. The church was primarily built in brick, consistent with 13th-century practices, while later additions such as the north chapels and the spire were constructed in limestone and tuff. The refined Gothic steeple, completed in 1331, is capped by four corner turrets and remains a defining feature of the city's skyline. In 1398, Saint-André's tower housed Grenoble’s first public clock, further cementing its civic importance.

The church also holds a rich musical legacy. Its first organ dates to at least 1439, with the present instrument originally built by François du Fayet between 1701 and 1704 and expanded by Samson Scherrer in 1748. Modified again in 1946, the organ has been played by renowned musicians such as Marcel Dupré and Gaston Litaize. For over three decades, it was the domain of Félicien Wolff, a composer and celebrated organist, continuing Saint-André’s role as a cultural as well as religious landmark.

Grenoble, often called the “capital of the Alps,” sits where the Drac and Isère rivers meet, framed by mountain ridges that have shaped both its history and identity. Its story begins long before France existed, when the Gallic Allobroges tribe founded a fortified settlement named Cularo. By the end of the 4th century CE, the town was renamed Gratianopolis in honor of the Roman Emperor...  view more
