Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Sar, Santiago de Compostela

The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Sar is a significant Romanesque Catholic temple situated along the Sar River in Santiago de Compostela. Recognized as a National Monument and a Well of Cultural Interest, it holds great historical and architectural value.

The construction of the church began in the second third of the 12th century with the initial works dedicated to the construction of the chapels at the church's head. Despite Archbishop Diego Gelmírez consecrating the church before his death in 1140, the works were not fully completed. It is estimated that the construction should have concluded in the early 13th century. The Compostela workshop, responsible for completing the church and constructing the cloister and other monastic dependencies, clearly exhibits the influence of Master Mateo, a renowned figure in Romanesque architecture.

The Collegiate Church of Santa María del Sar exemplifies the characteristic features of Romanesque architecture. Its historical significance, architectural beauty, and association with the Camino de Santiago have contributed to its recognition as a cultural treasure.

Legend has it that after Saint James, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, was martyred in Jerusalem in 44 AD, his followers carried his decapitated body by sea to Spain. Others claim that the saintly remains were miraculously taken up by angels and sailed to the coast of Galicia, where a massive rock closed around it and was later moved to its final resting place.
