Comando do 2o Distrito Naval (Brazil's Navy Command of the 2nd Naval District), Salvador

The Bay of All Saints isn’t just a pretty sight; it’s a watery battlefield where the undefeated Tamandaré Navy carved out key victories, including the pivotal Naval Battle of May 4, 1823. This battle saw the Brazilian fleet overpower the Portuguese, sending Governor Madeira de Melo and his troops retreating. Centuries later, during World War II, Brazil stepped into the fray with Salvador chosen as the headquarters for the Naval Command of the East. The name stuck until 1945, when it was revamped to Command of the 2nd Naval District (Com2°DN).

The Com2°DN building, now a historic, artistic, and cultural landmark, stands tall (and well-maintained) as a must-see for visitors. Under the Naval Operations Command, it’s not just a pretty relic-it ensures smooth sailing with maritime traffic control, search and rescue operations, port defense, and collaborative efforts with other security forces.

Maritime power in Brazil isn’t just about keeping the waters safe. The Bay of All Saints is a thriving center for everything from nautical tourism and shipbuilding to fishing, sports, and science. In fact, it’s a key player in Brazil’s "Blue Economy," advocating for sustainable ocean and river resource use.
