The Contemporary Dayton, Dayton
Originally founded in 1991 as the Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC), The Contemporary Dayton was created by a coalition of artists, art professionals, and supporters who recognized the need for stronger connections between the public and regional visual artists. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant nonprofit institution with over 6,000 square feet of gallery space, dedicated to presenting innovative and socially engaged exhibitions that are always free and open to the public.
The Co showcases a full calendar of exhibitions each year, featuring the work of both nationally recognized and Ohio-based artists. Notable past exhibits have included pieces by Zachary Armstrong, Curtis Barnes Sr., Cauleen Smith, and Curtis Mann, a Whitney Biennial participant.
Signature events like the Open Members' Show, ARTtoBUY Holiday Gift Gallery, and an annual fundraising auction highlight the diversity and creativity of the regional arts scene. Its CoSHOP retail space supports local artists by offering original artworks and handmade goods, extending the centre’s mission beyond the gallery walls.
