De Waag Building, Delft

De Waag Building, Delft

Nestled on the west side of Delft’s bustling Markt, just behind the historic Town Hall, De Waag is a monument that tells the story of the city’s vibrant trading past. Dating back to at least 1539, this former weigh house played a vital role in Delft’s economic life by ensuring the fair weighing of goods, a key practice for maintaining trust in trade and taxation. Merchants transporting commodities through the city’s extensive canal network were required to have their wares weighed here under the supervision of municipal officials, safeguarding both buyers and sellers from fraud.

Over the centuries, De Waag evolved alongside the city. In 1644, it was expanded on a larger scale, which still bears the date 1647. In 1770, its two connected buildings were unified, and it is this elegant façade that visitors admire today. The building also hosted several important guilds, including the gold and silversmiths’ guild and later the physicians’ and apothecaries’ guild, reflecting its central role in Delft’s commercial and social fabric.

Architecturally, De Waag is a fine example of Dutch Renaissance design, featuring ornate stonework, gabled roofs, and Delft’s coat of arms on its façade. Although it no longer serves as a weigh house, it now houses a cozy restaurant and bar where visitors can relax while overlooking the lively square. Situated among iconic landmarks like the Nieuwe Kerk, De Waag offers a perfect starting point to explore Delft’s canals, history, and enduring charm.
