Edificio Aurora (Aurora Building), Asuncion

Standing prominently at the intersection of Caballero and Eligio Ayala Streets in downtown Asunción, the Aurora Building is one of the capital's most iconic residential towers. Completed in 1978 and rising to a height of 95.8 meters with 27 floors, Aurora was the tallest building in Paraguay throughout the 1980s. Although no longer the city’s tallest, its open perimeter and central location in the "microcentro" give it a dominant presence on the skyline, especially amid the historic low-rise buildings that define much of the surrounding area.

Aurora is best known for its luxurious apartments-some of the most expensive in the city-and nearly all of them enjoy sweeping views over nearby Plaza Uruguaya, especially vibrant during spring when the trees burst into color. The building also served for years as an advertising platform, famously hosting a large Lucky Strike sign on its rooftop.

Its main entrance, located on Caballero Street, opens into a grand foyer, and the building features brightly colored balconies that add visual energy to its otherwise modernist facade. On the ground floor is the National Immigration Office (Dirección General de Migraciones), serving a steady flow of visitors alongside the tower’s private residents.

In a city without a tightly clustered high-rise zone, Aurora remains a standout, emblematic of Asunción's mix of heritage preservation and sporadic vertical growth. Nearby landmarks include the modest Hotel Chaco and a patchwork of historical buildings protected under local regulations, which have helped preserve the distinct character of the city center even as modern developments like Aurora rise above it.
