Eglise du Sacre Coeur (Church of the Sacred Heart), Ajaccio

Eglise du Sacre Coeur (Church of the Sacred Heart), Ajaccio

The Church of the Sacred Heart is a striking neo-Byzantine-style building, located in the heart of the foreigners' quarter. It was consecrated on June 7, 1929, during the Feast of the Sacred Heart, giving the church its name. Built in tribute to the Corsicans who perished during World War I, it stands as a solemn memorial to their sacrifice.

Its white facade, designed by Jacquemus Robert, features intricate sculptural details, while stained-glass windows created by Valentine Reyre add a touch of color and artistry. Despite its elaborate exterior, the interior of the church is marked by its simplicity and refinement.

Originally, there were plans to engrave the names of all Corsicans who fell between 1914 and 1918, but instead, a more modest tribute was chosen. A guestbook inside the church records the 351 Ajaccians who died for their country, serving as a solemn remembrance of their bravery.
