Elisabetin Reformed Church, Timisoara

Elisabetin Reformed Church, Timisoara

The Elisabetin Reformed Church stands as a significant symbol within the collective consciousness of Timișoara, revered as the birthplace of the 1989 anti-communist revolution. The historic event unfolded on December 15th, 1989, when hundreds of parishioners rallied in defense of Pastor László Tőkés, a vocal opponent of the oppressive regime, facing eviction from the parish house adjacent to the church. Marking this pivotal moment, two marble plaques, inscribed in Romanian, Hungarian, German, and Serbian languages, stand near the entrance, commemorating the commencement of the revolution that dismantled the dictatorship.

Architecturally, the church epitomizes the Anglo-Gothic style, characterized by its clinker brick exterior and adorned with a prominent rooster atop one of its towers. With a prayer hall spanning 250 square meters, accommodating 312 seats for parishioners, and an additional 47 seats for singers and choristers on the upper level, the church can host approximately 500 individuals. Crafted by artisans such as Leopold Wegenstein and Jakab Fischer, the church features a meticulously crafted organ and solid oak pulpit, pews, and furniture.

The building's facade, delineated into five registers, showcases intricate decorative elements, including apparent brickwork, ogive-shaped arches, and rhythmic cornices. Since 1996, the church's tower has housed two bells, cast in honor of significant events such as the third meeting of the World Communion of Reformed Churches and the 1100th anniversary of the Hungarian state's foundation. Commemorating the church's 110th consecration anniversary, a set of 11 bronze bells imported from Hungary adorn the facade, providing melodic renditions of religious hymns throughout the day.
