Elphinstone Theatre, Colombo
Elphinstone Theatre opened in 1925 and was one of the earliest buildings in the country designed only for showing films. It was developed by Madan Theatres Ltd, a company from Calcutta founded by Jamshedji Framji Madan. Some sources mention earlier construction dates, but it is generally accepted that the theatre opened in the mid-1920s. It first showed silent films and later sound films, helping bring cinema to a wider audience.
The building shows clear features of colonial-era theatre design. The front façade includes double Ionic columns, giving it a formal but balanced look. Inside, the main hall was built with tiered seating and a deep stage, allowing it to be used for both films and live performances. Today, the air-conditioned auditorium can seat roughly between 600 and 900 people. While some parts have been updated, the overall structure still reflects early 20th-century cinema planning.
Over time, the theatre became especially important for stage drama rather than only films. It is closely linked with the growth of Sri Lankan theatre and is known for hosting plays such as Maname and Sinhabahu. As of 2026, it remains active, hosting stage dramas, music shows, and film festivals. The theatre is managed by the Tower Hall Theatre Foundation and has been renovated to improve facilities while keeping its historic character.
