Emmaus Lutheran Church & School, Indianapolis
Emmaus Lutheran Church & School has been a cornerstone of the Fountain Square community in Indianapolis for over 120 years. Founded in 1903 at the intersection of Laurel and Orange Streets by German settlers, the church is a testament to the enduring faith and service of its congregation. The adjacent school, established in 1901, extended the church’s mission by providing Christ-centered education for preschool through eighth grade.
Emmaus Lutheran School flourished for over a century, shaping generations of students in a nurturing and faith-driven environment. In 2001, on its 100th anniversary, the school moved to a new, state-of-the-art facility at 8626 Covington Road. However, the school is set to close at the end of the 2023–2024 school year. Despite this, Emmaus Lutheran Church continues its legacy of service, offering worship, community outreach, and a food pantry to those in need.
The church’s dignified structure, rooted in its Lutheran German heritage, stands as a beacon of faith and fellowship. Multi-generational families have remained part of the congregation since its inception, and new members are always welcome. Emmaus is committed to living out Christ-centered lives, emphasizing love for God and neighbors while embracing the transformative message of Christ crucified.
