Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg

Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg

Everard Read stands as Africa's oldest commercial art gallery. It was founded in Johannesburg and marked its centennial anniversary in 2013. Since its inception, Everard Read has been closely associated with leading artists working in Southern Africa.

Throughout the 20th Century, a significant number of South Africa's most significant paintings and sculptures were displayed within the gallery's original location in central Johannesburg. Everard Read also played a role in procuring Fine Art from renowned international artists, a practice that continued over the years.

In the late 1970s, after 50 years in the city center, a new gallery was constructed on Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank, to house Everard Read. This building has since become a renowned symbol of South African post-modern design.

A century and a decade since its inception, Everard Read now boasts galleries in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Franschhoek, and London. Across all of its locations, the gallery remains steadfast in its dedication to showcasing paintings and sculptures created by South Africa's most accomplished modern and contemporary artists. Fostering the careers of young artists also stands as a pivotal aspect of the brand's mission.
