Fayzulla Khujayev House, Bukhara

Fayzulla Khujayev House, Bukhara

The Fayzulla Khujayev House in Bukhara serves as a vibrant testament to 19th-century architecture and a portal into the region's rich history and culture. Originally owned by the prosperous merchant Ubaydullo Khoja Kasym Khodjaev, the property was later inherited by his son, Fayzulla Khodjaev. Acquired in the late 1880s, the estate spans three hectares and features multiple residences designed to accommodate a large family.

The house museum is structured into distinct sections: the male and female quarters, various living rooms, including a grand guest room, and additional spaces for household needs. The interiors are richly adorned with intricate wood carvings, antique furniture, and unique decorations that highlight the opulence of the period. The museum also houses an impressive collection of vintage items such as porcelain dishes, Uzbek musical instruments, and traditional Bukharian garments, offering a glimpse into the luxurious merchant lifestyle of that era.

Fayzulla Khodjaev, who lived from 1896 to 1938, took a different path from his father's merchant endeavors. A statesman, Fayzulla promoted Jadidism and led the Bukhara People's Soviet Republic. His life took a tragic turn in 1937 when he was arrested and subsequently executed in 1938. However, he was posthumously rehabilitated in 1965.

Today, the Fayzulla Khujayev House-Museum stands as a cultural landmark, showcasing the grandeur of the Bukhara emirate and the legacies of both father and son. Visitors can immerse themselves in ethnographic exhibitions that reveal the splendor and cultural richness of 19th and early 20th-century Bukhara, making it a must-see destination for those interested in the region's history and heritage.
