First United Methodist Church, Jacksonville
First United Methodist Church, traces its origins back to 1823 when John Jerry, a dedicated missionary, began spreading the word of God across the state, traveling on horseback with his belongings. Over the years, the church evolved and was rebuilt multiple times.
Completed between 1947 and 1951, the current structure of the church closely follows the original neo-classical design but with enhancements like Doric columns and a taller, more prominent tower, giving the building a greater sense of grandeur. Despite these additions, the church retains the simple, elegant style that has been part of its character since its founding.
The building’s design, typical of mid-century American classical architecture, features a front portico and a unique spire with a latticework of leaves, making it a notable landmark in downtown Jacksonville.
Though the United Methodist Church as an official denomination was formed in 1968, its roots in Jacksonville go back much further. The church's connection to the broader Methodist movement dates back to the 18th century, and the Jacksonville congregation has been an active part of the city's religious life since 1834.
Today, the church is known for its rich musical traditions and welcoming services, with an emphasis on liturgical mass.
