Mount Zion AME Church, Jacksonville
Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church holds significant historical and architectural value. Founded in 1866 by a group of freedmen, it is one of the city's oldest and most prominent religious institutions.
After the Great Fire of Jacksonville in 1901, the church was rebuilt in 1905 in the Romanesque Revival style. The striking structure is set on a stone foundation and features arched and art-glass windows, giving it a unique character. The bell tower and contrasting brick cornerstones (quoins) add to its architectural charm, making it a standout landmark in the area.
In 1992, Mount Zion AME Church was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, solidifying its importance as a cultural and spiritual center.
Throughout the years, the church has undergone several expansions, growing in size to accommodate its congregation.
The church's history is deeply rooted in Jacksonville's post-Civil War African American community, and its construction reflects the resilience and strength of that community.
