Fontana Cap è Ciuccio (Cap è Ciuccio Fountain), Amalfi

The Cap è Ciuccio Fountain, dubbed the “Donkey’s Head Fountain” by locals, is a historic fountain, which provides a quiet moment of discovery amid the bustle of Amalfi’s historic center.

Erected in the 18th century, its name goes back to the days when laden donkeys-descending from nearby Pogerola with fruits, vegetables, and firewood-paused here to drink from the fountain’s spouts. Twin marble faces decorate the basin’s sides, each serving as a sculptural conduit for water.

What truly sets this fountain apart is its handcrafted presepe from 1974, an Italian nativity scene that depicts the birth of Jesus. The figures-many partially submerged in the flowing water-were originally modeled by Giuseppe Buonocore, Vincenzo Livano, and Nicola Pepe, and continue to be cared for by the Infante family.
